I’m stumped. Three weeks ago I enrolled in an online writing course recommended by my professor. It’s a four year course, and I’m pretty excited. I’m also pretty blocked. I have nothing. Zilch. Nada. The first assignment is the easiest one and I haven’t got a thing to say.
Tell us in about 300 words why you want to write and your ambitions for the future.
Why do I want to write? I don’t really know. Isn’t ‘because I like to’ a sufficient answer? So I come to you blog friends. It seems like I think better when I know who I’m talking to. (also in my head, the tutor is a cyborg*)
I want to write because :
- I like to.
- It helps me get out of my head. Everything that is a blurry mass of emotions and thoughts all become clearer. I hope someone, somewhere, will find my messed up chaotic thoughts meaningful in some way.
- I want to make people laugh. Making people cry is easy, you just throw in a self-sacrificing doctor who dies in a mudslide trying to protect orphans (ahem, Nicolas Sparks) and the everyone’s in tears. Making people laugh is completely different.
- It helps me feel more confident about myself. Ever since I started this blog, I realized that I’ve become a lot more confident in real life. I don’t know how it happened. I’ve always been a shy person, and I’m noticing that I’m standing a lot taller, and talking a lot more.
- Someday I want to say the words ‘I am a writer’. I want to tell people that they can take their fancy business school degrees and their stupid (and rapidly becoming redundant) IT jobs and take a hike, because I love what I do ‘I am a writer.’
- I love stories. I like reading them, I like telling them. I love the look on a kid’s face when you tell him a story. I want to put that face on more people. I want to watch them escape into a fantasy and forget about the real world.
- I guess I’d like to make a difference. I admire people who make big signs and scream their voices sore, I really do. But I think today with the internet we can reach so many more people than a megaphone ever could. Maybe someday my words might make a difference in the world.
Why do you write?
*Not that I’m afraid of cyborgs or anything. I mean, they might be terrifying to some, but not me. Nope. Not at all.
Miss Four Eyes,
I like to write because when I write, I am not tempted to watch America’s Next Top Model.
Le Clown
If it weren’t for writing, do you think you’d watch Honey Boo Boo?
There wouldn’t be anything better to do…
It’s an expression of yourself. It is a way to collate your thoughts and ideas in ways that emotionally connect with people, that moves them.
Or maybe it’s because J K Rowling made so much money out of it and you want a slice of that pie 🙂
Haha! Yes, that would be nice too 🙂
But the connecting with people mostly, I like that
I write for all of the reasons you mentioned! Get out of my head woman!
Stop leaving your head unlocked.
Touche.
Also, it makes me feel like if I die tomorrow, people will have something tangible of “me” left over.
I like this the most! It’s perfect!
If, I die tomorrow people will know that my last words were about cyborgs 😀
Can’t get any better than that!
Ooooh, yeah, that’s a really good one!
For some of us, writing is as natural as breathing…
Have fun, young lady. You’re a natural.
Thanks, Hook! You’re the sweetest.
The first thing that caught my eye: Four YEAR course? Like 365 days, four times?!? (Just checking)
And all of your reasons are amazing! See, just like you thought – you got this assignment in the bag! (I especially agree with your, “It’s harder to make people laugh,” I’ve ALWAYS felt this way! It’s super easy to make people cry, but laugh?)
And I love telling stories too – so writing is a good way to permanently tell your story 🙂
Yup. FOUR years!
I’m glad someone else thinks so too. People I know always assume that a soppy story is the hardest to write. Btw, you always make me laugh 🙂
I like that, ‘writing is a good way to permanently tell your story’. Like you’ve left a mark in the world. Maybe put a smile on someone’s face
I’m so glad I make you laugh! You just put yourself on my #1 list!! =D
I write because I am — hehehehe! But seriously folks, writing to me is like taking a shit or having a baby. It’s something that must be expelled — THAT was absolutely awful. Use that first one.
You’re a really good writer, funny as hell and quite devilish. When you write that book I’m buying it.
I like the other one better – writing is like taking a shit or having a baby! LOVE it! This is why I think you’re awesome.
Oh, Sandee, you are just so sweet! Thank you 🙂
P.S. I like your new gravatar
I wrote a piece about why I write. Feel free to steal it for class. 😉

Oh! This is great. Thanks, Calahan!
I write because if I didn’t, my life would probably have as much conflict as an episode of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. …I think, anyway. I’ve never actually watched it.
It all honesty I write because it helps me connect more with my own thoughts. I’ve actually been thinking about writing about this for a while now, so thanks for reminding me of it once again!
I think I’d be crouching in a corner, rocking back and forth, praying for someone to save me from the boogie monster!
I don’t understand why connecting with one’s own thoughts is so hard to do on a normal basis. I mean, they’re my thoughts shouldn’t I know what they are?! It’s really great that writing gives us the ability.
Can’t wait to read yours 🙂
I write to release and it feels good, plus no sweating is involved. Love your list.
I will never understand sweat. Working out is good for you. But then you sweat and smell bad, thereby discouraging said workout. 😕
But releasing without sweat is good by me!
I write because the degree I’m studying doesn’t require anything more than disjointed sentences and a few numbers here and there, and I miss writing in full prose! I also write because I still enjoy using punctuation (that sounds really sad… but it’s true!)
I like punctuation too! Sometimes I get a little comma crazy. I’m a comma whore, as a friend once put it. I’ve been trying to cut back.
I write simply because I can. Some people heal, some people can run a marathon, some people can dance. I write.
And I love the way you write. I bet I’d love the way you dance too 😀
It’s lovable yet terrifying
Miss Four Eyes,
By blogging I hope to raise enough money, so I can make you your very own Mr. Twelve Eyes-cyborg.
Insanely yours,
Daan
Gah! No! Not a Twelve Eyed cyborg! Not that I’m scared or anything….
Okay I am. Terrified actually. He’s half man, half robot, AND has three times as many eyes as I do!
Buuuuut, he’s really awesome!
…er, okay. But only if he’s really really awesome!
i write because many women find it sexy. unfortunately, most of them are half my age and halfway across the country.
Women do find writers extremely sexy. We also like older men.

It can be a difficult question to answer, although technically I don’t think my blog poss are writing (accept the one or two that are short stories), it is just getting out what is in my head and want to share with people in the hope of getting to know more people.
I think, writing is writing. Whether you’re doing it commercially or just to let everything out of your head. I started off for the same reason, in the hope of getting to know more people.
